The first chances were for the visitors from Groningen in the first half. After fifteen minutes this resulted in a striking header from FC Groningen captain Stije Resink. After this early deficit, FC Volendam had to chase and that did not really work in the first half.
Injuries Pauwels and Kuwas
A disappointment for Volendam was the retirement of Benjamin Pauwels. After a sprint, Pauwels grabbed his right hamstring in the 36th minute and it was the end of the game for the fast attacker. Aurelio Oehlers was his replacement.
Shortly afterwards, Groningen was close to a second goal. Thom van Bergen shot on the outside of the post. On the stroke of half time, Volendam equalized against the odds.
After VAR intervention, Brandley Kuwas managed to take advantage of a penalty. He did this while he injured his shoulder. “I am the first penalty taker and I took my responsibility,” says Kuwas.
