If Mick Schumacher wants to celebrate a successful IndyCar debut, he will have to start a big race to catch up – because qualifying is disappointing for the newcomer.

Former Formula 1 driver Mick Schumacher has to fight his way through the field in his first race in the American IndyCar Series. In qualifying on the St. Petersburg street circuit in Florida, the 26-year-old only managed 21st place, with four drivers still finishing behind him.

With a time of 1:01.398 minutes, Schumacher, driving for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, was passed through in qualifying group 1, even though he initially started well. The race will be broadcast on Sunday at 6 p.m. German time on the sports channel Sky.

Pole position was secured by New Zealander Scott McLaughlin from Team Penske ahead of former Formula 1 driver Marcus Ericsson from Sweden (Andretti). Behind him were rookie Dennis Hauger (Dale Coyne Racing) and defending champion Alex Palou (Chip Ganassi).

Despite his status as a newcomer to the IndyCar Series, Schumacher does not see himself in this role. “I don’t see it as a rookie year and I don’t allow myself any rookie mistakes,” he said before his debut. Michael Schumacher’s son already has extensive racing experience: After his time in Formula 1 with Haas (2021-2022) and as a Mercedes reserve driver, he competed for Alpine in the World Endurance Championship for two years, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
