Club Stalker was not just any club. Club Stalker was way ahead of its time. “It has been a very important club in the development of the club scene in the Netherlands,” says Alexander de Bruijn. “And the development of dance in the Netherlands, because they were there before the Roxy and before the It in Amsterdam.”

De Bruin would know, because in addition to being a curator at the North Holland Archives, he was regularly on the dance floor in Stalker.

Progressive

According to former employee Manique Hendricks, there was “progressive programming”.

“For example, DJ TiΓ«sto played here when he was not yet well known. He did not have to come back, because they thought he played too commercially.”

Stalker was also the place where artists could show their work. Fashion shows were held, poems were recited, custom sets were built, anything was possible.

“I also think that clubs have a major role in society. Artists never start in a museum or a gallery. A club is really a place for experiment. For example, where people go out in drag for the first time.”
