After the disappointment in the singles, tennis professional Alexander Zverev achieved a coup in the doubles competition in Acapulco, Mexico, alongside his friend Marcelo Melo.
For the first time without his brother Mischa, Alexander Zverev celebrated a double tournament victory on the ATP tour.
In the final in Acapulco, the 28-year-old and Marcelo Melo from Brazil won confidently in two sets, 6:3, 6:4, against Alexander Erler from Austria and Robert Galloway from the USA.
“Marcelo has been my best friend for over ten years and we finally won a tournament together,” Zverev said afterwards: “We’ve been in the final a few times and now we’ve finally done it. That’s something very special.”
To celebrate the day, sombreros were placed on the duo’s heads, and the two friends lay in each other’s arms, beaming with joy.
Tennis: Italian wins singles in Mexico
In the semifinals, Zverev/Melo gave the Spanish top talent Rafael Jodar and the Mexican Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez no chance with 6:3 and 7:5.
So far in his career, Zverev has won two doubles competitions: in 2017 in Montpellier and in 2019, also in Acapulco, he triumphed with his brother Mischa. Together, the Zverev brothers also suffered a whopping five final defeats.
Zverev surprisingly reached the last doubles final in 2024 at the Masters in Monaco, where he narrowly lost out alongside Melo with 7:5, 3:6 and 5:10 against Sander Gille and Joran Veilen from Belgium.
In Mexico, the Hamburger was able to forget the disappointment in the singles with his double victory: he had already failed in the round of 16 against the Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic.
The Italian Flavio Cobolli ultimately secured the tournament victory, defeating Frances Tiafoe from Canada 7:6 (7:4), 6:4. Since 2016, no winner in Acapulco has been younger than the 23-year-old.
