The 40-year-old ski racer Romed Baumann doubts his future in professional sports. However, the World Cup silver medalist is not lacking motivation.
Ski racer Romed Baumann is apparently facing the end of his career after his appearance at the World Cup downhill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The 40-year-old record holder with 167 World Cup downhill runs coasted to the finish on Saturday after a near-miss and then explained that it wasn’t the motivation that he lacked, but rather the willingness to push himself to the limit.
“It’s more the willingness that you get into the tunnel, keep your focus – I don’t know if I’ll get in there again,” said the Austrian native after his race on the Kandahar. Baumann almost missed a goal during his run and then consciously decided not to take any risks. “I didn’t risk anything, I didn’t trust myself to go up there again,” he explained.
His World Cup career began 22 years ago, and Saturday’s start was his 387th. Baumann celebrated his greatest success two years after moving from the Austrian to the German association with silver in the Super-G at the 2021 World Cup.
He had previously won World Cup bronze in 2013 in the super combined event, which has now been abolished. His only two World Cup victories were in this discipline. After his race, Baumann emphasized: “I’m healthy, that’s worth more than two or three World Cup points.”
