Yemisi Ogunleye did a cartwheel for joy and happily jumped into the air several times: The Olympic shot put champion won her third German Championship title in a row with a personal best indoor performance and continued to gain self-confidence on the way to the World Championships. In Dortmund, the 27-year-old shone with 20.37 m, Katharina Maisch came second (18.73) ahead of Julia Ritter (18.13).

“The championships are always something special. The goal was to defend the title, I achieved that,” said Ogunleye at the “WDR” microphone – plus the personal best in the fifth attempt: “That’s more than I had hoped for today.” She also set her previous record of 20.27 m a year ago in Dortmund.

It is “very tiring” when you “think a lot about the technology” during the competition, explained the Mannheimer. Ogunleye specifically changed her rotation kick technique after a difficult year following her Olympic gold coup. “Now I’m going into the World Cup preparations with a good feeling,” said Ogunleye. The World Indoor Championships will take place from March 20th to 22nd in Torun, Poland.
