The Finn Elian Lehto falls violently during training in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and has to go to hospital. A Frenchman also gets injured and is out for the time being.

The Finnish ski racer Elian Lehto and the Frenchman Nils Alphand were seriously injured during downhill training in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Lehto is in the intensive care unit with injuries to his chest and lower leg, while Alphand will be out for at least three weeks with a sprained acromioclavicular joint.

Lehto lost control on the Kandahar runway and crashed into a safety net. A helicopter took him to the hospital. The Finnish association said his injuries were not life-threatening and he was conscious and responsive. His condition will be further monitored in the coming days.

Alphand also crashed in training and will miss the World Cup races this weekend. The men’s World Cup races in Garmisch-Partenkirchen begin on Saturday with the downhill and on Sunday with the Super-G.
