Bayer has achieved clinical trial success in the treatment of prostate cancer with a combination therapy of its drug Xofigo.
Xofigo is a so-called “alpha radiopharmaceutical” with the active ingredient radium-223 dichloride, which emits radioactive alpha radiation and thus has a targeted effect against cancer cells in the bones. In a phase III study with patients suffering from metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) and bone metastases, the prostate cancer drug enzalutamide in combination with Xofigo reduced the risk of death by 24 percent compared to monotherapy with enzalutamide alone, as the pharmaceutical company announced.
The study showed a statistically significant improvement in both radiological progression-free survival and overall survival compared to enzalutamide monotherapy in bone metastatic mCRPC. The survival benefit was consistent across most predefined subgroups.
Radium-223 dichloride is approved under the brand name Xofigo in more than 50 countries for the treatment of patients with mCRPC and symptomatic bone metastases without known visceral metastasis.
In Frankfurt, Bayer shares fell by around 0.26 percent this morning.
