Mick Schumacher starts in the IndyCar Series, but his uncle Ralf is skeptical about the change. He highlights particular risks.
Mick Schumacher has decided to switch to the IndyCar Series and will make his debut on Sunday in St. Petersburg (USA/Florida). His uncle Ralf Schumacher described this step as “unnecessary”. At the same time, he explained in a discussion with Sky that the average speeds of 360 km/h in the series were more dangerous than in Formula 1 races.
Ralf Schumacher would have preferred to see Mick continue with Alpine in the World Endurance Championship or in Formula 1. “With this step, this door is also closed,” said the 50-year-old, emphasizing that new talents are always coming up and waiting for their chance in Formula 1.
The Sky expert generally sees little prospect for young Germans in Formula 1. “We won’t have any Formula 1 drivers in the foreseeable future,” he said, citing, among other things, a lack of go-kart tracks due to nature conservation requirements.
Currently there is only one regular German driver in the premier class, Nico Hülkenberg. A Grand Prix in Germany last took place at the Nürburgring in 2020, but only as a Corona replacement event.
