“Tragic,” says a man who has known the victim for about forty years. “Terrible, you wouldn’t wish this on anyone,” says another. Formally completing the identification of the victim takes longer than usual, but the police confirm that it is most likely the resident of the house on De La Reijstraat.
Detectives are conducting trace investigations
“He didn’t come here seven days a week, but five or six,” says one of the pub patrons. Another adds: “When his wife was still alive, he came here every day, at three o’clock in the afternoon.” The other: “You could set the clock by that. If he wasn’t there at a quarter past three, you wondered: where is he?”
The police cannot yet say anything about the circumstances of the crime. The detectives will continue to investigate traces all day and may continue tomorrow. A neighborhood survey is also underway. The police collect camera images and ask people who have seen or heard something to report.
