Defending champion SC Magdeburg gave up their first point in the Champions League.

The Elbe city team won 29:29 (12:14) against Poland’s champions Wisla Plock. Matthias Musche and Albin Lagergren were the best SCM throwers with five goals each. In the duel for group victory, Magdeburg (23 points) will host FC Barcelona (22) next week.

The SCM traveled to Poland without Omar Ingi Magnusson, who was missing for personal reasons. Sebastian Barthold was in the squad for Magnusson, starting on the left wing.

Magdeburg’s defense had problems with throws from the backcourt by Sergei Kosorotov, and the SCM also missed a few attacks (3:5/7.). The hosts were not without mistakes either, but with an interim spurt they moved ahead by two goals at half-time.

SC Magdeburg shows morals

The SCM didn’t come out of the break well, made technical errors and made numerous missed throws: Plock pulled away with six goals (12:18/35th). “I wonder what we discussed in the dressing room,” complained coach Bennet Wiegert during a timeout.

The announcement only had a limited effect – Magdeburg shortened the gap, but overall the defending champions lacked the defensive access to start a comeback. Only in the final phase did the SCM regain its sovereignty and work its way up (26:27/56.). Ten seconds before the end, Gisli Kristjansson equalized and secured the point.
