Coach Domenico Tedesco and Fenerbahce were eliminated from the second round of the Europa League despite a 2-1 second leg win at Nottingham Forest. After the 3-0 defeat in the first leg in Istanbul a week ago, Kerem Aktürkoğlu’s brace (22nd/48th) was no longer enough for the Turks to advance. At least there was hope for a while before ex-Leverkusen player Callum Hudson-Odoi scored for the home team in the 68th minute and virtually sealed Fener’s fate. In the draw for the round of 16 on Friday afternoon (1:00 p.m.), Nottingham can face the Spaniards from Real Betis or the Danes from FC Midtjylland as opponents.
Before the four games that kicked off at 9 p.m., VfB Stuttgart (despite 0-1 against Celtic, see the match report), Ferencváros (2-0 against Ludogorets), Panathinaikos (5:4 a.e. at Viktoria Plzen and LOSC Lille (2:0 a.t. at Red Star Belgrade) had already prevailed. VfB’s opponents are SC Braga or FC Postage in question.
SC Freiburg had already qualified for the round of 16, meeting either FC Bologna or the winner of the KRC Genk game against Dinamo Zagreb. The Croatians had equalized the 1:3 from the first leg in Belgium, the game continues in extra time (to the live ticker). Bologna won 1-0 in front of their home crowd against SK Brann from Norway in the evening after the 1-0 first leg, the goal scorer was winter newcomer João Mário (56th).
