The ERC Ingolstadt demanded a lot of patience from the EHC Munich on Wednesday evening. Only in the last third of the DEL-Upper Bavaria derby were the Munich team able to prevail against the Panthers – with a flurry of goals at the very end of the game.
EHC Red Bull Munich returned from the Olympic break with a win. In the SAP Garden at home, the EHC beat ERC Ingolstadt 4-0 (0-0, 0-0, 4-0) on the 45th DEL matchday. In order to secure victory, the Munich team had to be patient on Wednesday evening: Ingolstadt goalkeeper Devin Williams in particular kept thwarting the hosts’ plans. Gabriel Fontaine (2nd), Tobias Rieder (8th), Yasin Ehliz (13th, 19th) and Brady Ferguson (14th) couldn’t get past the goalie at the beginning. But the Munich goalie also held his ground and prevented Daniel Schmölz from almost taking the lead after just 50 seconds.
Three hits in 111 seconds
Both teams had their chances in the first two thirds, but were unable to convert. The hosts tried to move forward with strong duels and high pressure. But it wasn’t until six minutes before the end that the first goal came: The Panthers gave Fontaine a little too much space, who beat Williams in the near corner – and scored the late lead in the 54th minute – 1-0.
The home team gained momentum in the final third. They were promptly rewarded for their effort: Eisenschmid and Ehliz increased the score with empty-net goals, and Rieder made it 4-0 on the counterattack. The last three goals all came within just 111 seconds. “It was a very good game for us after the break,” said Rieder in the BR24Sport interview. The goalscorer also admitted that they were two “good teams” – “that could have gone either way.”
