“We came to Volendam together to do this,” says Bont about the collaboration with her husband. “He is also handball crazy and it is nice that he is also on our staff. We sometimes say that we should talk about something other than handball. Fortunately, my husband also has another job, haha.”
The fact that Bont became world champion with the Dutch team in 2019 inspires her Volendam players. “In terms of handball status, Debbie is someone everyone looks up to. In the Premier League anyway. Who wouldn’t want a world champion as a coach?!,” says player Nyah Metz. “She is one of the few Volendam residents who has played abroad and is also a world champion,” adds Sharon Plat.
