Verwilst’s lawyer also refers to what he calls a small way of doing old-fashioned village politics. He asks the judge to suspend the sentence. Verwilst would not have enriched himself, only attended meetings unknowingly, where he would have been better off staying away. Jan Leysen, counsel for Dirk Verwilst: “Obviously we are at the lowest level of politics here, where more than 40 complaints have been filed, of which only one remains standing. And then one that is very light, but legally sufficient. I can only say here that Mr. Verwilst’s former right-hand man has given him a final blow.”
On March 25, the judge in Bruges will decide whether Dirk Verwilst is guilty of interests and whether he should be punished for it.
