Germany’s tennis star Alexander Zverev made a successful comeback on the tour more than three weeks after his bitter semi-final exit at the Australian Open.
The number one seed from Hamburg defeated Frenchman Corentin Moutet 6:2, 6:4 in the first round of the ATP tournament in Acapulco/Mexico on Wednesday night. In the round of 16, Zverev will now face Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic.
“Corentin can be a difficult opponent, especially if, like me, you haven’t played any matches in a while“, said Zverev after the success in 1:31 hours, in which he did not allow a break: “So I’m definitely happy with my performance and I’m looking forward to what’s still ahead of me.” Zverev had already won in Acapulco in 2021.
Violence in Mexico
At the Australian Open in Melbourne at the end of January, Zverev narrowly missed the final in an epic five-set thriller against Carlos Alcaraz.
The 28-year-old then took a break, traveled quietly to Acapulco, where the tournament will still be held despite the violent outbreaks of violence in Mexico, and put in several days of training.
His daughter Mayla is also there in Mexico, which Zverev says makes things a little easier. “This year I want to enjoy tennis a little more.”he said: “I’m getting older and I know it won’t last forever.
