A death has overshadowed the first victory of the handball players of SG Flensburg-Handewitt in the main round group 1 of the European League.
There was a medical emergency in the hall, the club announced after the defending champions’ 40:35 (21:20) win over the French club Montpellier HB: “Unfortunately, all measures taken were unsuccessful.”
SG managing director Holger Glandorf said: “Our thoughts are with the relatives and friends of the deceased in these difficult hours. Handball and everything sporting is taking a back seat today.”
It was only in the last quarter of the game that Flensburg were clearly the better team. At 33:31 (49th), goalkeeper Benjamin Buric fended off a seven-meter shot from Benjamin Richert. In the next attack, Niclas Kirkelökke increased the score to 34:31.
With Buric’s save against Valentin Porte at 38:35 (57th), everything was clear. The second leg will take place in the south of France next Tuesday (8:45 p.m./Dyn).
