Wolfsburg is threatened with relegation from the Bundesliga. That’s why there’s renewed speculation about the comeback of an old friend.
The sporting crisis at VfL Wolfsburg has once again fueled speculation about the return of former master coach Felix Magath. As the “Bild” newspaper reports, the 72-year-old’s name came up during the internal discussion of possible coaching candidates.
Magath led Wolfsburg to the German championship in 2009. The former national player worked for the club twice: from 2007 to 2009 and from March 2011 to October 2012 as a coach and sports director in Wolfsburg.
When asked by the “Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung”, Magath did not want to comment on the rumors: “I don’t want to say anything about the situation at VfL.” Since 2025 he has been working as a sports director at his home club Viktoria Aschaffenburg in the Bavarian Regional League.
After six games without a win, VfL is only in 15th place in the Bundesliga table – level on points with FC St. Pauli in the relegation spot. Sports director Peter Christiansen expressed his confidence in Daniel Bauer, who was only promoted to head coach in December, last Saturday after the 2-3 defeat against FC Augsburg.
However, Christiansen himself has come under criticism in Wolfsburg because of the sporting developments of the past few months. The first rumors about Magath’s return arose last November and December when the Dane’s position was discussed.
An advocate for Magath could be the new supervisory board member Diego Benaglio, who played under him in Wolfsburg and was brought to VfL by him. However, there are also said to be voices in the control committee who are not convinced that Magath will return.
