The book The remembered soldier by the Dutch writer Anjet Daanje from Wijster is on the longlist for the International Booker Prize. The organization behind the prestigious prize for the best work of fiction translated into English announced this today.

The Remembered Soldierthe English translation of the book, is one of the thirteen books on the longlist. The shortlist of six books will be announced on March 31, with the final winner on May 19.

The remembered soldier was published in 2019. The book is about a soldier who is found just behind the Belgian front line during the First World War. He’s not hurt, but he doesn’t know who he is. He lives in an asylum and one day is visited by a woman who recognizes him as her husband. The woman takes him home, but he does not remember his life with her.

The New York Times was full of praise for the book. According to the American newspaper, it is one of the best hundred books of 2025.

Anjet Daanje is also known for her acclaimed book Song of stork and dromedary. With that book she won the Boekenbon Literature Prize and the Libris Literature Prize.
