German tax law offers far more options than just the classic travel expenses and work equipment. From dog care to artificial insemination to chimney sweeping costs, numerous unusual expenses can be deducted from tax.
Pet ownership
Caring for pets while on vacation can be tax deductible, as income tax compact explains. However, certain requirements must be met for this to happen. Animal care must take place within your own four walls and the carer must be a registered business. If these conditions are met, 20 percent of the work and travel costs can be deducted as household-related services, up to a maximum of 4,000 euros per year. It is important that food or accessories for the animal are not recognized.
Medical costs
Costs for artificial insemination can be partially deducted from taxes if the health insurance company does not pay, as the income tax assistance association Vereinigte Lohnsteuerhilfe eV reports. Braces and dentures can also be claimed for tax purposes as soon as they exceed the reasonable personal burden, as Smartsteuer explains in its guide.
According to Steuererklaerung.de, medical costs that are considered medically necessary can be deducted as extraordinary expenses – but only the part that was not reimbursed by the health insurance company or insurance and exceeds the reasonable burden limit.
Funeral costs
Funeral costs can be claimed as an extraordinary tax burden up to a maximum of around 7,500 euros, as Allianz explains in its guide. The crucial requirement is that the costs must be covered for legal or moral reasons and that the deceased person’s estate is not sufficient to cover the expenses. If there are heirs who could bear the costs, or if the estate is sufficient, the tax office will not recognize the expenses.
Apartment and household
Chimney sweeping costs are one of the household-related services that many people don’t even consider. Almost all chimney sweep services are deductible as tradesman services. According to the Lohnsteuerberatungsverbund e. V., this now also applies to expert activities such as the fireplace show. What is important, however, is that only work and travel costs including the applicable sales tax are deductible; Material costs are not taken into account. 20 percent of this is deductible, but only up to a maximum of 1,200 euros per year. A wide range of chimney sweeping activities are tax-privileged. This ranges from sweeping, cleaning and maintenance work to measuring and checking services through to fireplace inspections and legionella testing.
