Martin Scorsese and “Star Wars” – a combination that no one saw coming.
Martin Scorsese enters a galaxy far, far away – at least with his voice. The Oscar-winning director takes on a voice cameo in the upcoming film “The Mandalorian and Grogu” and lends his voice to a so-called Ardennian.
Who are the Ardennians?
The Ardennians are a four-armed humanoid species that fans were first introduced to in Solo: A Star Wars Story. There, the pilot Rio Durant was part of the crew around the young Han Solo – spoken by Jon Favreau, the creative mind behind the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian”. Ardennians are considered to be technically adept, quick-thinking and, thanks to their four arms, particularly adept at using spaceship technology and weapons.
The second trailer for “The Mandalorian and Grogu” shows a marketplace scene: Din Djarin, played by Pedro Pascal, meets a four-armed dealer with Grogu – originally spoken by Scorsese.
First “Star Wars” movie in seven years
“The Mandalorian and Grogu” marks the saga’s return to the big screen. There hasn’t been a new movie since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The start in Germany is announced for May 21, 2026.
In terms of content, the film is intended to take up the events after the third season of “The Mandalorian” and further escalate the conflict between the Imperial remnants and the New Republic. The focus is once again on the bounty hunter Din Djarin and his protégé Grogu, also known as “Baby Yoda” by fans.
Herzog was there before Scorsese
It is not the first time that a renowned filmmaker has participated in the “Star Wars” universe. Werner Herzog had a supporting role as “The Client” in the first season of “The Mandalorian.” His character set the central storyline around Grogu in motion – including the now iconic sentence: “I would like to see the baby.”
Scorsese as a guest
Martin Scorsese has often appeared in guest roles, both in his own works such as “Taxi Driver” and “Casino” and in other productions. He most recently had a cameo in Seth Rogen’s The Studio, which earned him an Emmy nomination. He has also worked as a voice actor, including as the pufferfish Sykes in the animated film “Big Sharks – Little Fishes”.
