Electric and hybrid technology prevailed: According to Consumer Reports, these top models will reach the top positions in the US market in 2026.
• According to Consumer Reports, all of the top 10 picks for 2026 are hybrid or electric
• Most top picks come from Japanese manufacturers such as Honda, Toyota and Subaru and impress with efficiency and reliability
• US manufacturers such as Ford and Tesla also secure top positions
The independent non-profit organization for research, product testing and consumer protection, Consumer Reports, has published its annual list of the “Top 10” best new cars, trucks and SUVs for 2026 – and it is surprising: for the first time, all top models are hybrid, available as a hybrid version or fully electric. But which vehicles make it onto the experts’ list – and which model particularly stands out in the electric car category?
Why the “Top Picks” are important
The organization’s recommendations are intended to help buyers find a car that is reliable and safe and will also meet their long-term needs. According to Phil Radford, president and CEO of Consumer Reports, Top Picks make car buying easier because they highlight quality vehicles that meet buyers’ priorities, budgets and needs, as quoted in the current report.
This is how the winners were determined
According to Consumer Reports, the evaluation of various vehicles is based on driving tests, member surveys on reliability and owner satisfaction, and crash test results from authorities and insurance companies. The aspect of the automatic emergency braking system, which is standard equipment on all winners and detects pedestrians in traffic and also works at higher speeds, also plays a role in the evaluation.
“All ten top picks have some important similarities: They performed exceptionally well in our comprehensive driving tests, received high ratings for safety, reliability and owner satisfaction, and our team of experts would not hesitate to recommend them to friends and family,” Alex Knizek, deputy director of vehicle test development at Consumer Reports, said in the release.
Hybrid models dominate the top selection
Hybrid vehicles in particular feature heavily on Consumer Reports’ list because they often offer faster acceleration, quieter interiors and greater fuel efficiency than internal combustion engine vehicles. Winners include the Honda Civic, the midsize Toyota Camry, SUVs such as the Subaru Crosstrek, the Subaru Forester, the Toyota Grand Highlander and the Lexus NX luxury SUV. When it comes to pickups, the Ford Maverick and F-150 are impressive, while the BMW X5 stands out in the luxury segment. While the hybrid models dominate the list, only one model can prevail in the purely electric segment.
The highlight among electric vehicles
In the purely electric segment, the Tesla Model Y occupies the top position. According to Consumer Reports, the Model Y combines practical design and sporty dynamics in a compact SUV. The generous range ensures relaxed driving – drivers also benefit from access to Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network. The chassis and cabin have been revised in the new Model Y, offering even more comfort. The interior has also been upgraded and in the Premium equipment there is now an additional touchscreen for the rear seats. It continues to impress with dynamic acceleration, precise handling and comfortable seats, while the forward view remains unobstructed, the organization continues.
According to Consumer Reports, the all-wheel drive version with a long-range battery also scored well in the highway range test, achieving 331 miles at 70 mph. The Model Y also shines when it comes to charging speed: charging at home adds around 42 miles of range per hour. The front seats also offer a high level of comfort, while the back seat also offers enough space for passengers. In addition, the reliability of the vehicle has been further improved. The Model Y can thus secure the top position among electric vehicles.
The 2026 Top 10 list shows that electrified drives are increasingly taking over the top spots – from efficient hybrids to the Tesla Model Y, the only all-electric vehicle among Consumer Reports’ top picks.
