A new phase of energy exploration in the Mediterranean has begun with the signing of several contracts between the Greek state and a consortium of Chevron Corporation and Helleniq Energy.
According to the government in Athens, exploration work will be carried out in several offshore areas located south of the island of Crete and the Peloponnese peninsula.
Greece and the USA
Internationally, the conclusion of the contracts is seen as a signal for closer energy policy relations between Athens and Washington. The USA has long been striving for a stronger presence in the region – both through participation in production projects and through the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for the European market.
Strategic realignment of the EU
The agreements fit into the strategic realignment of European energy policy. The EU is pursuing the goal of becoming largely independent of Russian natural gas by the end of 2027, according to government circles in Athens.
