Albert Verlinde thinks that Matthijs van Nieuwkerk did not necessarily start his newsletter to force a TV comeback. “But I think he misses having an impact.”
Lately, Matthijs van Nieuwkerk has been regularly making headlines again. No longer because of the De Wereld Draait Door scandal, but because he now makes the top three every day via newsletter platform Substack. And he then also records it for the podcast version. Unpaid. Then why does the presenter do it?
‘He wants attention’
Albert Verlinde does not so much think that Matthijs is looking for a TV comeback, but simply wants attention again. When he recently praised Wilfred Genee to the skies as part of such a top three, it even made it to RTL Boulevard. Wilfred stood in front of the camera of the show section to say that he was so honored by it.
In other words: Matthijs still has an impact despite everything. And that’s what Albert is all about. “What I think he misses is the impact when he talks about something or when he shows what he knows,” he says RTL Tonight.
‘That’s what Matthijs said’
Albert strongly suspects that. “I think he missed that a bit. That something happens and people say: ‘Yes, Matthijs van Nieuwkerk said that then.’ Or: ‘Remember? That book was in De Wereld Draait Door with a sticker on it.’”
The show expert, who is not averse to a little attention himself, continues: “I think he actually misses influencing a bit and he is doing it a bit this way.”
Lifelong
If it were up to Albert, Matthijs could also be on TV again. “Things did not go well in those years and he did not act in a good way as a manager in such a program, but to receive a kind of life sentence for it and that you are no longer allowed to appear on TV remains ridiculous.”
But, he says: “I don’t think he will return to TV so quickly. That’s what people think, that this is a route to first get on TV in Belgium and then here. I think he thinks: I’m 65 guys, I believe so. Although we really miss him and as far as I’m concerned he is very welcome.”
