New “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” series planned. Another film is being made at the same time. Both projects are intended to expand the mythology of the horror franchise.
A24 has secured the rights to the horror classic “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” after an intense bidding war. The studio is planning both a series and another movie in the franchise universe.
It is no coincidence that A24 was awarded the contract. The studio has a strong horror history with acclaimed genre works such as “Midsommar” and Ti West’s trilogy “X”, “Pearl” and “MaXXXine”. The production company is also behind a series adaptation of another horror classic: the “Friday the 13th” prequel series “Crystal Lake” developed for Peacock.
“It wasn’t an easy decision, but A24’s consistent commitment to cross-border genre cinema and experience in dealing with artists who consciously take risks made the studio a compelling choice,” explained Kim Henkel, who co-wrote the 1974 original with Tobe Hooper, according to the press release.
And further: “We also believe that with a strong creative and producing team – JT Mollner, Roy Lee, Dan Cohen and Glen Powell – we have the best conditions for a series that can be truly surprising and eye-opening. There is an epic narrative in the backstory of “Chainsaw”.”
Leatherface gets depth
At the center of the first A24 development is a new series, which is led by JT Mollner. The director recently attracted attention with the Stephen King adaptation “The Long Walk”. Glen Powell is an executive producer, but will not be in front of the camera. In addition to Henkel, the producing team also includes Roy Lee, who already has extensive horror experience.
In terms of content, the series is expressly not intended to be a remake. Those responsible want to expand and deepen the mythology of the franchise instead of simply restaging well-known motifs. According to the press release, Mollner emphasized that he considers the original film to be a perfect work and has no interest in simply remaking classic horror films.
Since the original film from 1974, eight sequels, prequels and remakes have been created – most recently Netflix’s “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” from 2022.
Parallel to the series, another film from the “Texas Chainsaw” universe is already in development at A24. This should be realized independently of the series and without Mollner’s direct involvement. There is currently no concrete information about the plot, cast or start dates.
