Shortly before the opening of the Olympic Games there is a lot of excitement. Sanitary facilities in the Olympic Village were probably damaged by unknown persons.
According to media reports, there has been a security breach in the Olympic Village for the Winter Games in Milan. Despite all checks, the sanitary facilities in several dozen rooms in the athletes’ accommodation were deliberately damaged by unknown persons, reports the newspaper “Corriere della Sera”, citing the police. Access to the newly built village is actually only possible with a special ID card and QR code.
According to investigators’ findings, the showers in a total of 70 rooms in three different buildings were damaged between mid-December and mid-January. It is assumed that milling machines were used. The damage was only noticed due to water damage, reports the “Corriere”.
We’re talking about vandalism or sabotage. An anti-terrorism unit from the Milan public prosecutor’s office also took part in the investigation. It is hoped that images from the surveillance cameras will provide information.
The Winter Games open on Friday evening with a big show at Milan’s San Siro Stadium. In addition to the city of 1.3 million inhabitants, the host is also Cortina d’Ampezzo in the Dolomites. The competitions also take place in several other locations in the north of Italy. To protect the 2,900 athletes, more than 6,000 police and other security forces will be deployed over the next two weeks.
