It is the city of Ostend that is asking for the removal of protection of almost 18 hectares. The heritage value has already been lost due to construction and paving. Project developer Versluys wants to build two residential towers in that zone, where there is no construction ban. But many nature and other organizations oppose the abolition. The immediate vicinity of the protected Fort Napoleon, the Hundius Battery and the Lange Nelle Lighthouse, a total of about 12 hectares, remains protected as a cultural-historical landscape.
