Norway’s bonus prince once tried to withdraw from the public eye. Now the whole world is watching his trial.

In January 1997, a big change happened in Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby’s life. She gave birth to her first child, who was named after her Marius Borg Høiby.
Marius’s father’s relationship By Morten Borg had already fallen out with before the son was born. Before Borg became a father, his life had contained dark moments. He received a prison sentence for possession of cocaine in 1991.
Mette-Marit raised her son as a single parent until, at the end of the millennium, she met her future spouse, Crown Prince Haakon. The duo’s relationship aroused disapproval, as some felt that a single mother would not be suitable for the bride’s crown prince. Mette-Marit also had to talk publicly about her own youth, which included drug use.

Ominous words
Marius became a big brother in January 2004, when Ingrid Alexandra born in. Compared to her older brother, Ingrid was in a special position. She would become Queen of Norway.
King Harald’s sister, Princess Ragnhild, spoke about Marius’s situation around the time of Ingrid’s birth in a Norwegian TV2 documentary Princess i exil.
The words were harsh.
– I feel so sorry for that boy. After the birth of a new child, the Marius parka is no longer worth anything. The boy is 6 years old, but he will definitely notice the difference [aiempaan]Ragnhild said.
– There are going to be problems. I hope they are prepared for them, Ragnhild said.

Out of the public eye
Almost ten years ago, Mette-Marit published by an open letter about Marius. The crown princess opened up about the difficult position Marius had been in.
– Marius is and will continue to be a vital member of our family. She has always had a public role that has been very difficult to define, the crown princess wrote.
As a mother, she pointed out that Marius does not have official duties compared to his siblings.
– Marius became a symbol of the unusual choice that we [Mette-Marit ja kruununprinssi Haakon] we did when we got married.
At the same time, it was announced that Marius would leave the public eye. The young man would start studying economics in California.

The Daily Mail reported in April 2018 how Marius had moved to London with his model girlfriend. Marius’ fair and striking appearance also attracted attention in the international press. He was often listed among the “most handsome royals”, even though he had no official title.
Dagens Næringsliv reported in 2019 that Marius worked in a startup company focused on nightlife.
– He has good expertise in the field. He has worked in Los Angeles and it’s no secret that we want to expand to the US. He has a very wide network in the USA in addition to the networks in Norway. He is very motivated and I think both the job and the tasks suit him very well, the company manager commented.
The descent began
At what point did Marius’ life go off the rails?
It is difficult to say the exact time, but the charges read on Tuesday give some indication of the man’s life. There were 38 charges in total. Marius is accused of four rapes, the first of which would have happened in December 2018.

He is accused of, among other things, numerous traffic crimes, aggravated assault, drug crime, intimate partner violence and threats. The list of charges is breathtakingly long. At the same time, it gives the impression that intoxicants have colored the young man’s life.
On Sunday evening, Marius was arrested again on suspicion of new crimes. He was later transported to the hospital for tests. Despite this, he appeared in court on Tuesday.
According to the Bild newspaper, Marius was shaking when the charges were read to him.
The trial is expected to last until March 19.
