The first Olympic competitions traditionally start before the opening ceremony. A technical error immediately occurred.
A bumpy start for the Olympic curling tournament in Cortina d’Ampezzo: Even before the opening ceremony, there was a technical interruption in the first games of the mixed competition.
In the Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium the lights suddenly went out during the games and the electronic results display also temporarily did not work. The organizers announced via a TV image that the matches were interrupted due to “technical maintenance”.
The athletes initially felt helpless. Some looked around questioningly, two curlers whiled away the wait and imitated an air guitar with their brooms. After about five minutes the light came back on. The spectators applauded and the curling teams responded with laughter.
The stadium in the winter sports resort was built in 1955 for the Winter Games the following year. The German curlers are not represented in the mixed tournament at the current Winter Games and are only qualified for the men’s event.
