Fiber optic, water, electricity… and that footpath is always open: “There is no stick behind the door for municipalities”

The footpath of Pedro Pisonier (50) from Ghent is open for the third time in one month, and he is far from the only one who has to deal with this: throughout Flanders people are complaining about dust, noise and subsidence after utility companies keep opening up streets. Cities and municipalities are powerless. CD&V therefore wants higher fines for utility companies that break up sidewalks too often or make a mess of them. Flemish Member of Parliament Brecht Warnez also wants a ‘click line’, where everyone can immediately report defective or annoying works.
