The German national soccer players Nick Woltemade and Malick Thiaw missed the successful defense of their title in the English League Cup with Newcastle United.
In the semi-final second leg, the Magpies lost 1:3 (0:3) against Manchester City; team manager Pep Guardiola’s star ensemble Skyblues had already won the first leg at St. James’ Park 2-0.
Former Bundesliga professional Omar Marmoush, who was allowed to start in place of star striker Erling Haaland, ensured an early decision with his brace at the Etihad Stadium (7th/29th), Tijjani Reijnders (32nd) followed up. Substitute Anthony Elanga scored on Thiaw’s assist for Newcastle (62′), Woltemade remained in the dressing room at half-time.
City follows Arsenal FC into the final; the Gunners beat Chelsea FC 1-0 on Tuesday thanks to a late goal from DFB striker Kai Havertz (first leg 3-2). The Carabao Cup final will take place on March 22nd at Wembley Stadium.
