Captain Christian Günter has extended his contract with SC Freiburg beyond the season. The left-back is Breisgauer’s record player.
SC Freiburg without Christian Günter? That’s hard to imagine. And so the defender has now renewed his contract in Breisgau, which expires at the end of the season, as the club announced on Wednesday afternoon. Günter has been playing for SC Freiburg since the C youth team; he came to the Freiburg football school in 2006 from the small FV Tennenbronn in the Black Forest. Six years later, as a 19-year-old, he made his debut in the sports club’s Bundesliga team and was later called up to the senior national team eight times thanks to his outstanding performances.

The leading player Christian Günter has also been the captain of the Freiburg team for more than five years. Last November, the left-back played his 440th game for the sports club Andreas Zeyer The club’s record player away. The 32-year-old now has 453 competitive games.
“There have been so many occasions in the past when Christian’s sporting and human qualities were rightly highlighted. Christian would probably say: Enough chatter, let’s move on!” says sports director Klemens Hartenbach in a press release from the sports club. “The remarkable thing is that Christian isn’t letting up in any area. We’re happy!”
Günter: “Still very hungry”
Christian Günter himself is also continuing his path in Freiburg with his own ambition: “I’m still very hungry and there’s nothing better than playing for the sports club. We’re successful as a team this season too – we want to continue that. I’m looking forward to the many tasks that still lie ahead of me.”
As usual, SC Freiburg did not provide any information about the exact duration of the new contract.
