Olympic silver medalist Lea Sophie Friedrich missed out on another medal at the European Track Cycling Championships in Konya.
The 26-year-old was narrowly defeated by the Russian Alina Lysenko in the small final in two runs in the supreme discipline of sprint. Lea Lin Teutenberg’s hopes of another medal in the omnium were also not fulfilled one day after taking bronze in the elimination race.
This means that the German team came away empty-handed on the third day of the title fights after winning six medals – including two gold ones – on the first two days.
European Track Cycling Championships: Friedrich has no chance against the British
In the sprint competition, Friedrich initially clearly lost the semi-final against the British Sophie Capewell 0-2. In doing so, the British documented their current supremacy. In the final, Capewell was even defeated by her outstanding teammate Emma Finucane. After all, Friedrich and the German team won the team sprint final against Great Britain on Sunday.
Teutenberg was still on course for a medal in the all-around omnium after the second of four disciplines before she made a mistake in the elimination race. While she had taken third place in this discipline the day before, this time she was eliminated early. To make matters worse, the Cologne woman was then involved in a fall. In the end, after the final points race, it was enough to finish seventh overall, with victory going to Briton Emma Morris.
Max-David Briese took a good fifth place in the scratch race, which was won by the Swiss Alex Vogel.
