“Trump would go on a tirade”

The Football World Cup starts in just over four months. There is a boycott debate in Germany in advance. A well-known commentator also comments.

TV commentator Frank Buschmann has commented on a possible boycott of the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico in the summer of 2026. According to Buschmann, this would have no effect. “Trump would let out a few rants and carry on as before. Fifa would not suddenly accommodate Europe,” he said in an interview with the “Tagesspiegel”.

According to Buschmann, nothing would change politically through a boycott – but it would only harm those who boycott, i.e. the players and also the fans, who would then not be able to watch football.

However, there is a way in which the boycott debate could increase. “If anything, it’s because of security concerns. We’ve just seen an NBA game canceled in the USA because the situation was too tense. If something like this happens frequently or the domestic political mood escalates, then at some point you’ll get to a point where sports organizations have to react.”

Buschmann himself will not take part in the world tournament as a commentator. “I would have decided not to comment there. Not to make a statement, but because I wouldn’t feel comfortable doing so.” Nevertheless, Buschmann will watch the games on television. “I don’t believe in demonstratively not looking,” said the 61-year-old.
