The US pop singer responds to online criticism of her Grammy performance with a clear message: The transparent Mugler look is great and unusual.

Chappell Roan has spoken out about the wide range of reactions to her main outfit at the 2026 Grammy Awards. At the 68th edition of the awards show on February 1st, the musician was one of the most talked about artists – less because of the trophies, but more because of her uncompromising aesthetic.

Statement on Instagram: “Great and unusual”

Chappell Roan commented on the online discussions via her Instagram account on Monday, February 2nd. “I have to smile because I don’t even think this outfit is THAT scandalous,” the US pop star wrote about the look. She described the ensemble as “really great and unusual” and recommended that her followers exercise their personal freedom – it was “really fun and silly”.

Details about the red carpet look

The outfit consisted of a sheer hooded Mugler robe with a burgundy colored dress underneath. The construction of the dress attracted particular attention thanks to its unconventional fastening – held by two decorative rings on the upper body.

Medieval fantasy as an aesthetic concept

Make-up artist Andrew Dahling was responsible for the overall visual appearance and developed a consciously reduced beauty concept together with MAC Cosmetics. The aim was not to overlay the elaborately designed temporary tattoos, but to give them space. Dahling explained to the press: “As soon as the tattoos came into play, everything took on a medieval dimension – but in an authentic way.” The motifs seemed less like decoration and more like part of a self-contained fantasy world that combined historical references with modern pop iconography.

Some observers interpreted individual motifs of the body painting symbolically. For example, a pony motif in the chest area was read as a possible reference to Roan’s song “Pink Pony Club”, one of the central titles of her work to date.

Aside from the staged Grammy look, Chappell Roan also has real tattoos. These include, among other things, a swan motif on the forearm, to which she attributes personal meaning.

Restraint as a stylistic device

Smoky but soft eyes, subtle metallic accents and a subdued nude red on the lips ensured that jewelry, textures and silhouettes remained the focus.

In contrast to Chappell Roan’s often eccentric glam looks, this time the team opted for conscious restraint in the make-up. Dahling describes the approach, according to Marie Claire: “There was so much going on – the tattoos, the prosthetics, all these details. We wanted it all to fit together and respect the world we created.”

A second look, a different mood

Later in the evening, Roan appeared in a second outfit: a flowing, angelically draped dress with a cooler feel. The makeup was adjusted accordingly – lavender tones, metallic highlights and dramatic shading created a new atmosphere without abandoning the basic idea of controlled cool. Here, too, it was less about effects than about attitude.

Roan’s performances at the Grammy ceremony

During the awards ceremony, Chappell Roan presented the Best New Artist category, which was won by British artist Olivia Dean. As a nominee, Roan herself was represented with her single “The Subway” in the “Record of the Year” and “Best Pop Solo Performance” categories, but was unable to take home any trophies.

Between pop theater and the next career step

Musically, Chappell Roan is currently in a phase of readjustment. After the success of her last releases, she is working on new material that, according to interviews, will be more personal and experimental at the same time. Topics such as identity, desire and self-presentation remain central, but are more closely linked to electronic and theatrical elements. Roan doesn’t think of pop as a product, but as a total work of art – an attitude that is also reflected in her visual decisions.

The singer, who won Best New Artist at last year’s Grammy Awards, has since established herself as an emerging voice on the US pop scene who consciously breaks expectations.

Grammys without a trophy – but with an impact

Even though Chappell Roan wasn’t able to convert her nominations into a Grammy in the end, her performance was a statement. In an awards ceremony that often relies on safe images, she used the global stage for an artistic design that defied common expectations. Sometimes, as this evening showed, the more lasting victory lies not in the gold, but in the memory.
