The long contract poker around Dario and Upamecano finally seems to be coming to an end. But many people are now asking themselves: Was it really necessary to push it to the absolute limit of pain? Bayern will of course take the stance that we have remained firm. Our offer has not changed. 20 million annual salary, 20 million earnest money, term until 2030, earliest exit clause in 2027, transfer fee set at €65 million. Upamecano’s advisors wanted the earnest money straight away. Bayern then want to pay it out over the course of the contract. In the end, Bayern prevailed. In this respect, one can of course be of the opinion that the winner of all this contract poker is FC Bayern. On the other hand, the offer was very, very generous anyway. And the fact that Upamecano’s advisors are exploiting this to such an extent does of course not reflect well on the club. Incidentally, these are the same consultants who are said to have demanded an annual salary of €60 million from Ousmane Dembele at Paris Saint Germain, for example. Strangely enough, that didn’t go down so well at Paris Saint Germain. In this case too, they made very generous demands. FC Bayern stood firm. Does that reflect well on the club? No, it doesn’t. Is this legitimate from the consultant’s side? Yes, unfortunately that is the football business. But from my perspective, it’s primarily damaging to football and it’s potentially damaging to the player too. Because of course Upamecano will now be under very special observation by the fans in the next few weeks and months.
