In Drenthe, the number of fines issued for driving under the influence has increased by more than 70 percent in ten years. While 465 fines were issued in 2015, in 2025 851 people in Drenthe received a fine for driving under the influence. This is evident from research by comparison site Independer, based on police data.
The Drenthe image fits in with the national picture. Nationally, the number of traffic fines for driving under the influence rose even faster: as much as 80 percent. In 2015, 27,000 fines were issued. Last year there were 48,000.
The most fines were issued in Emmen in the province of Drenthe last year, followed by Hoogeveen. Assen completes the top three of Drenthe’s municipalities. Relatively speaking (i.e. the number of fines per kilometer of road), Hoogeveen is the municipality where the most fines have been issued, followed by Assen and Meppel.
Although the number of fines for driving under the influence in Drenthe rose sharply over the past ten years, the increase was greater in other provinces. Limburg, Groningen and Overijssel saw the largest increase in the past ten years.
