Tim Torn Teutenberg won the next German gold medal at the European Track Cycling Championships in Konya, Turkey. The 23-year-old triumphed in the points race over 40 km on the second day of competition ahead of the Dane Conrad Haugsted and Jasper de Buyst from Belgium. At the start, the German team sprinters had already won the title.
The women’s foursome missed gold. In the final of the team pursuit over 4000 m, Franziska Brauße, Lisa Klein, Laura Süßemilch and Mieke Kröger had to admit defeat to the British women; the German quartet was over two and a half seconds behind. In 4:02.808 minutes, Great Britain improved the world record that had already been set in the first lap in the afternoon; Katie Archibald, Josie Knight, Anna Morris and Millie Couzens took this from the Germans.
Germany set the previous record at the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2021. Brauße, Klein and Kröger drove to gold with Lisa Brennauer in a world record time (4:04.242). The British women absolutely pulverized them in the fast Velodrome in Konya.
Teutenberg’s sister Lea Lin, who is three years older, made it onto the podium in third place in the elimination race. She only had to admit defeat to the exceptional Belgian rider Lotte Kopecky and the Frenchwoman Victoire Berteau. In the men’s time trial, Maximilian Dörnbach raced to fifth place.
Germany already has six European Championship medals
“This gold medal is very important to me because points racing is not my absolute favorite discipline,” said Tim Torn Teutenberg, who was not scheduled to take part in the race but then replaced veteran Roger Kluge.
Teutenberg had already won silver in the elimination race on Sunday. In total, the Rhinelander has four European Championship gold medals, and at the 2024 World Championships he won the two-man team race with Roger Kluge. In the so-called Madison, Teutenberg goes to the velodrome on the final day with his team partner, who is 16 years older than him; last year the duo took silver.
Germany has already won six medals, and the day before Lena Charlotte Reißner also secured bronze in the scratch. The men’s foursome finished sixth on Monday. In the women’s sprint, Lea Sophie Friedrich is reaching for a medal, the silver medalist from Paris is in the semi-finals. The decision will be made on Tuesday.
