You would think that Borussia Dortmund has learned from the past few years. Because whenever such declarations of war as now came from Schlotterbeck, things went wrong. “We want to become champions”, “now we want to attack” – these are always the same platitudes that BVB utters during a supposed phase of weakness for FC Bayern.

However, this hasn’t paid off for 14 years, as Dortmund last became German champions in 2012. Compared to the club’s own demands and opportunities, this is a disgrace.

Nico Schlotterbeck’s statements are not wrong in principle – but the timing is 100 percent wrong. Yes, Bayern lost against Augsburg and only drew against HSV. The league lead has shrunk from eleven to six points, that is also true. But there are still six points that BVB has to catch up with.

It is unlikely that Bayern will start to tremble about Dortmund’s declaration of war and will feel exposed to greater pressure. It’s more of a gentle breeze that you might feel in Munich than a storm that’s breaking over you.

From Dortmund’s point of view, it would have been smarter to stack things a little deeper first, perhaps wait for the next two games – and then switch fully into attack mode. The following scenario is also conceivable: Bayern plays a top game against Hoffenheim at the weekend. BVB has to play in Wolfsburg. If Bayern wins and Dortmund loses, none other than the Ruhrpott club will once again look stupid. The gap would have increased again to nine points.

Therefore: talk less, rather BVB, instead finally deliver.
