1. FC Union Berlin could have attracted attention on winter deadline day like they did three years ago with the transfer of an aging star. At that time, ex-Real professional Isco was already at the Iron team for a medical check. Raheem Sterling at least offered himself to Köpenick a few days after his contract with Chelsea was terminated. Sports director Horst Heldt confirmed this on Monday.
“In every transfer period you are confronted with names that make you rub your eyes,” said Heldt on “Sky” in reference to the 31-year-old winger. “In this case it’s just the case that in the end it wasn’t serious and we didn’t follow it up either. We’re not doing anything anymore today. Players are suggested to us, but there was no concrete suggestion.”
Instead of Union Berlin: Sterling to Thomas Reis?
Sterling is currently the most valuable out-of-contract player with a market value of €5 million. He recently earned around 19.5 million euros a year with the Blues, but had no prospect of playing time anymore. This season he didn’t even appear on the field for the Londoners. In a total of 81 appearances he scored 19 goals and 15 assists. Last season he went on loan to arch-rivals Arsenal FC, where things didn’t go any better for Sterling with one goal and five assists in 28 games. The winger was supposed to look for a new club in the summer, but couldn’t find one. So Sterling was completely sidelined and trained with the Blues separately from the first team.
After things didn’t work out for him with Union, Sterling has other options where the transfer window is still open. For example in Turkey until February 6th, where Samsunspor is associated with him. The coach there is the former Bochum and Schalke player Thomas Reis. Qarabağ Ağdam, which caused a surprise in the Champions League and will face Newcastle in the second round, is also said to be interested. Transfers are allowed in Azerbaijan until February 10th. In any case, the rules for out-of-contract players are not the same in every country as in Germany, where from the end of the winter transfer window they are no longer allowed to be signed until it starts again in the summer.
