Steven Spielberg is making film history again. By winning the Grammy for “Best Music Film,” the legendary director has now officially achieved EGOT status, joining an extremely exclusive circle. Only 22 artists have so far won all four major show business awards: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.
Spielberg received the decisive Grammy as producer of the documentary “Music by John Williams”, directed by Laurent Bouzereau. The film honors the life’s work of his long-time companion, the legendary composer John Williams.
One of Hollywood’s most important creative partnerships
The personal and professional connection between Steven Spielberg and John Williams began in 1974 with Spielberg’s “The Sugarland Express”. Since then, the duo has been considered one of the most influential teams in film history. Because: With the exception of just five films, Williams composed the music for all of Spielberg’s works – together they celebrated their international breakthrough.
At the inauguration of the John Williams Music Building on the Sony studio site in January 2024, Steven Spielberg emphasized his appreciation: “In the end, I recognize the films not as mine, but as ours – thank you, Johnny, my films wouldn’t be the same without you.”
Their best-known joint projects include: “Jaws”, “Indiana Jones”, “ET – The Extra-Terrestrial”, “Schindler’s List” and “Catch Me If You Can”.
The icon John Williams
Since the 1970s, John Williams has been one of the most successful and influential film composers of all time. The American composer and conductor influenced generations of filmgoers with his unmistakable soundtracks. In addition to his work with Spielberg, he composed, among other things, the music for the first three “Harry Potter” films and that for “Star Wars”. Spielberg also made contact with George Lucas at that time.
Williams has been nominated for an Oscar 54 times and won the coveted trophy five times.
The film: “Music by John Williams”
The documentary “Music by John Williams” (2024) chronicles the composer’s extraordinary career and legacy. The film was made with the support of close friends and long-time companions of Williams.
The documentary premiered at the AFI Fest in 2024 and is now available on Disney+. With the Grammy win for this film, Steven Spielberg has finally secured his place in the top league of entertainment.
The EGOT succession to the throne
While Steven Spielberg completes cultural history with his EGOT entry, the focus remains on those who could still follow suit. Cynthia Erivo is still only missing the Oscar, but since “Wicked: Part Two” does not receive any nominations for the 2026 Oscar, this last step has been postponed for the time being. Adele, on the other hand, has already collected everything except the Tony with the Grammy, Oscar and Emmy – Broadway remains her last open stage. The same applies to Eminem, who has long since won everything musically and is only missing a theatrical success to be accepted into the most exclusive club in the entertainment industry.
