Hertha BSC has strengthened its team once again and signed another newcomer for the offensive who has already left his mark in the Bundesliga: Josip Brekalo is moving permanently to the capital.
The versatile attacker comes from Spain from Real Oviedo and has signed a contract with the Berliners until next summer, including an option for another year. With the number 7 on his shirt, the Croatian will ensure creativity and penetration in Hertha BSC’s attacking game in the future.
Sports director Benjamin Weber was enthusiastic about the new signing: “Josip has already proven his qualities at the highest level in Germany. He stands for creativity and a goal threat. We are very happy that he is once again increasing our offensive options.”
Brekalo himself made no secret of why the step back to Germany was easy for him: “I really wanted to come here because I know what a big club this is – what a past it has, but also what a future it has. Now I want to integrate into the team as quickly as possible and then help immediately.”
35 senior international matches for Croatia
The 27-year-old brings a wealth of experience to Berlin. Between 2016 and 2023 he played in the Bundesliga for VfL Wolfsburg and VfB Stuttgart. In 122 Bundesliga appearances, the right-footer scored 17 goals and prepared 14 more. There are also eleven games in the 2nd Bundesliga and a total of 35 appearances for the Croatian national team.
Brekalo has also traveled widely internationally in recent years: positions at GNK Dinamo Zagreb, FC Turin, AC Florence, Hajduk Split and Kasimpasa are on his CV. He also gained experience in the Europa League and the Conference League.
In the first half of the current season, Brekalo played 15 competitive games for Oviedo in LaLiga and the Spanish Cup.
