“Unfortunately, our record will be broken on March 22,” says René van de Kerkhof firmly. On that day, PSV will play the away match against Telstar. If René is right, the flatbed cart can start driving that day, on winter tires or perhaps even with snow chains. The existing record has been held by PSV since 1978, with René and brother Willy. “I heard the cart is already outside.”
It is not surprising that the brothers are already unabashedly celebrating the upcoming championship in the Willy and René Podcast of Omroep Brabant. Thanks to the victory over Feyenoord, the lead over number two from Rotterdam is already seventeen points. “Feyenoord was disastrous,” says René. “I have never seen such a bad Feyenoord. Van Persie must wonder whether he can still get things in order.”
Willy attributes the success mainly to his own strength. “Feyenoord absolutely could not get the ball. PSV played at a high pace, very attacking. Feyenoord had no chance against an unleashed PSV.” The only downside was that no more goals were scored after the early 3-0. “I already told Willem (van Hanegem) that it would be double figures again, but unfortunately,” Willy laughs.
“Against Bayern, Bosz should have simply parked the bus.”
The news that Peter Bosz is extending his contract made the day complete for the brothers. “I am very happy about that,” says René, who also has a critical note about the trainer. “Against Bayern I would have simply parked the bus after the 1-1.” Willy agrees. “But you didn’t have the key to the bus. After the 1-1, there were still ten minutes to play. He should have just added some defenders.”
Due to the defeat against Bayern, in addition to the almost certain national title, PSV only has the cup, for which PSV will play against Heerenveen this week. “The cup is just as important as the title, it is simply a main prize,” says Willy. “It would be unique if we won the Cruijff bowl, the title and the cup in one year.”
“NEC now favorite for second place.”
Ajax and Feyenoord would like to finish second, but Willy thinks that honor can go to Nijmegen this year. “I saw NEC play against AZ, and they were really good: attacking, opportunistic and well organised. For me, NEC is now the favorite for second place.” René sees it differently. “I understand it, but in the end one of the top clubs will probably come second. The bear has not been shot yet.”
