The specialty of ski flying, where length and style of jumps count. Italy has little hope of a medal

Journalist

February 2 – 3.03pm – MILAN

The competition takes place from the Predazzo ski jump in Val di Fiemme, which has been modernized for the occasion. Realistically, there are no podium prospects for Italy, which has never won an Olympic medal. Honoring participation as best as possible is the least that can be hoped for for the Azzurri. The stars are the Japanese Ryoyu Kobayashi (king of the 4 trampolines) and the Slovenian Domen Prevc. Women: Japanese Nozomi Maruyama and Slovenian Nika Prevc. The first six Olympic champions in the roll of honor are all Norwegian: to speak of a great tradition of the “Norge”, who now dominate in the mixed team event. Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Poland, Finland and Japan are the absolute protagonist nations of the discipline.

In ski jumping, athletes slide down a ramp from which they then take off in flight, with the aim of landing as far away as possible. For the purposes of the final ranking, not only the length of the jump performed counts (translated into a score), but also the style of execution (i.e. stability of the skis during the jump, balance, body position and landing), evaluated by the judges using a scoring scale ranging from 1 to 20. The HS point hill size – “slope measurement”) is the point of the slope located at an angle of 32° with respect to the horizontal line. Also in this case the measurement is expressed in meters and indicates the distance from the starting position. The competitions are held over two days on the small and large trampoline: the best 30, who will have 2 attempts, enter the second one.
