Rijkswaterstaat will carry out repairs to the viaduct at the Lankhorst junction on Tuesday night.

Last Thursday, pieces of concrete fell from the viaduct. After which parts of the road were closed for safety reasons.

Traffic on the A28 may still experience disruption during the evening rush hour on Monday and Tuesday. For safety reasons, one lane of the A28 in the direction from Zwolle to Meppel will remain closed.

The connecting road of the A32 towards Hoogeveen will also remain closed until the repairs have been carried out. Travelers should take delays into account and traffic that wants to use the connecting road from the A32 to the A28 will be temporarily diverted.

The repairs are expected to be completed after Tuesday night.

According to the spokesperson, the concrete damage was caused by corrosion in the steel reinforcement of the viaduct. This has caused CO2 to penetrate the concrete, causing the reinforcement, i.e. the steel structure or mold of the viaduct, to rust.

The rust causes the steel to expand and pieces of concrete can crumble. The spokesperson said that more major maintenance will take place at a later date.

“First we will make safety repairs so that no more concrete can fall down,” he says. “So that the lanes can reopen as quickly and as safely as possible.”
