A sketch series in the United States on Saturday Night Live got rid of Finnish stereotypes. In the sketch shown on Saturday, January 31, Swedish actor Alexander Skarsgård played a Finnish man.
In the sketch, the fictional talk show Immigrant Dad Talk Show was running, and the host played Marcello Hernandez. The guest of the talk show was the stout Finnish man Heikki Honkanen, played by Skarsgård.
The character remained quiet and appeared quite motionless. The Finnish character was asked how he would punish his child who was caught using marijuana at school.
– You have to bear your shame, a Finnish man would say to his son.
The Finnish character was also asked about an argument with his wife.
– We keep quiet, we bury the matter and then one day we finally die, Heikki Honkanen described in the sketch.
The sketch gets new spins when the Finnish character tells how his own father has shown him affection. It is said that father and son were sitting in a sauna once, when their kneecaps touched each other.
The father swore that the boy should not tell anyone about the incident.

In the sketch, Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård, who is also Alexander’s father in real life, was also seen in the role of the Finnish man’s father. He appeared when “the family’s hidden secret came out”. He storms off that he shouldn’t have been told about it.
– Your shame is yours, live with it, the father informed his son.
– White people are interesting. They never scream, they just push it down and then one day, they kill their wives, Hernández’s host character states.
After this scene, the rap artist Cardi B also visited the sketch.
A Finnish stereotype in a popular entertainment program has garnered comments on YouTube, among others. The fact that a Swede played a Finn in the skit has aroused anger among some Finns.
– I’m Finnish, and I don’t disagree with this, but it makes me a little angry that a Swede is presenting this. But I just try to forget it, one writes.
– Something in the sentence “your shame is yours” sounds so genuine… I couldn’t help but laugh.
– The stereotypical perception of Finns is that they don’t show their emotions and are very stoic. He hit the nail on the head.
– When I was a student, I met a Finnish boy who was similar to this guy, but less emotional. This guy’s feelings are messed up.
– As a Finn: Stellan’s portrayal of a Finnish man is 100% real. By the way, Finland has just been voted the happiest country in the world for the ninth time in a row. Think about it if you can.
– As a Finn, I accept this sketch, one states.
