The Directorate General (DG) Culture and Media is responsible for policy on culture (heritage, arts) and media (archives, creative industries), with the aim of guaranteeing an independent, varied and accessible culture and media offering for society. This involves major challenges, such as digitalization, artificial intelligence, pressure and criticism of constitutional institutions, (hybrid) threats and major social developments. The cultural and media sector is also facing major transitions, such as the reform of public broadcasting.
The Director General of Culture and Media, together with the management team, ensures a future-oriented course for the versatile organization that is responsible for policy, knowledge and implementation. He is both strategic and unifying and works for and with practitioners: the makers, governments, institutions, funds, museums and heritage organizations, media parties and all the people who make culture and media possible.
Christianne Mattijssen, director of the Heritage & Arts directorate at the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, will take up the position until February 23, 2026.
Mr. Y. (Youssef) Louakili has been Director of Media and Creative Industry at OCW since July 2021. Previously, he was head of Management, System and Lawyers at the Primary Education Directorate and deputy head of Educational Content and Quality of Secondary Education at the same ministry. Youssef is currently following the TMG TOP leadership program of the Directorate General of the General Administrative Service and in 2021 and 2022 he participated in the ABD Candidates Program. He started his career as a teacher in secondary education.
This appointment was made through the procedure for the top management group of the General Administrative Service.
