The world’s main application stores host a growing number of apps that allow “undress” real people using artificial intelligence. This was warned by a report from the Tech Transparency Project, which detected more than a hundred applications available on both Google Play and the Apple App Store, capable of generating sexualized images or videos from a simple photograph.

These tools, known as nudify apps, use AI models to simulate naked bodies or erotic scenes. without the consent of the person portrayed. In many cases, the process requires just uploading an image and waiting a few seconds, without effective controls on the identity, age or authorization of those who appear in the generated content.

The study estimated that these applications accumulate hundreds of millions of downloads worldwide and would have generated revenue of more than one hundred million dollars. Part of this business also benefits the platforms themselves, which keep a percentage of the purchases and subscriptions made within the apps.

The most striking thing is that both Google and Apple have policies that prohibit explicit sexual content, sexual exploitation and the abusive use of images of real people. However, the report notes lax application of those rules: Many of the apps detected remained active for long periods and some were even categorized as suitable for all audiences.

Another critical point is the risk that these tools are used for harassment, humiliation or digital violence, especially against women and minors. The ease of use and lack of robust filters amplifies the potential for damage by allowing the creation of false but highly realistic images.

After the report was released, some applications were removed from stores, although researchers warned that it is common for them to reappear under other names or misleading descriptions. For the Tech Transparency Project, the phenomenon exposes a structural failure in the control systems of large platforms and reopens the debate on the responsibility of technology companies in the face of the advance of artificial intelligence.
