Jean-Luc Dompé attracted attention by driving drunk through Hamburg. Not the HSV professional’s first drastic failure. The club now has to show toughness.
Jean-Luc Dompé is one of the best footballers in the squad HSV. This is precisely why his renewed misconduct is unacceptable. Anyone who drives a car with a blood alcohol level of 1.4 and then gets on an e-scooter and knowingly endangers people is no longer tenable for the HSV. The club has to take consequences, even if it hurts from a sporting point of view.
With a blood alcohol level of 1.4 per mille, a person is considered absolutely unfit to drive. Nevertheless, Dompé got behind the wheel early on Sunday morning, was stopped by the police and then noticed a second time. It was pure luck that no one was hurt. It is not a trivial offense, but a criminal offense. Dompé negligently put not only his own health at risk, but also that of others.
Added to this is the sporting context. After the disappointing 0-0 draw in the city derby at St. Pauli, in which Dompé was substituted with an injury, HSV has an important game against Bayern Munich. Especially in a phase like this, Dompé should have concentrated on his return. Instead, he weakens the club. He doesn’t seem to care about his form or the consequences of his actions. He shouldn’t expect any understanding for this.
As a professional footballer, Dompé has responsibility. Children and young people model themselves on their idols, and clubs promote prevention and education. Anyone who repeatedly ignores this responsibility loses the right to leniency.
According to Dompé’s own statements, the HSV “strongly” clarified his role as a role model and representative of the club. That’s not enough. Words alone obviously didn’t work. Jean-Luc Dompé is no longer tenable in terms of sport and morals.
Yes, HSV needs Dompé’s quality. Yes, giving up can be expensive in the end and lead to relegation. But consistency and a credible attitude are worth more than short-term success. After the Stefan Kuntz case, the club would have another chance to draw clear boundaries and present a united front. HSV has to part ways with Jean-Luc Dompé. Talent should not be an excuse.
