According to Mayor Ruth Vandenberghe, this approach is paying off. “In January 2026, we counted around 600 fewer vehicles per day than at the start of the trial. This confirms that we have found the right balance,” she says. “That is why we are now switching to a permanent traffic light installation and at the same time investing in safe infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians.”
In addition to the traffic lights, there will also be a new cycle path near the Bartier garage. This should guide cyclists from Bissegem to the lights in a safe and logical manner, separated from car traffic. This means they no longer have to use the footpath to cross.
Alderman for Mobility Trui Steenhoudt calls the decision important after a long debate. “With the final traffic lights and the new cycle path, we are creating a safer and clearer traffic situation in Driekerkenstraat. Traffic remains possible in both directions, but with more comfort and safety for everyone.”
